Working With Firms

November 29th, 2007

All good churches want the whole world to hear and respond their message. This sometimes means working with freelance designers or design firms to find the perfect medium to communicate the right message.

We find that it’s not natural for people in a church to know how to work with an out of house designer. This article from Church Marketing Sucks is a good starting point for churches wanting to work with a designer.

Architect vs. Contractors
It’s important to know the difference between architects and contractors when it comes to getting your project done. Architects are the ones who create and plan, contractors are the ones who execute. Many freelancers and firms attempt to do both and, in many cases, it can work out due to the size of a project. However, make sure you know what you’re asking for when it comes to your project. If you’re acting as the architect, make sure the freelancer or firm you’re hiring knows that their role is to make your plans happen. Too many architects is like too many cooks in the kitchen. No architects is like a plan with no vision…

The Rebel’s Guide to Joy

November 8th, 2007

The statistics say that the North American church is lacking men. Mars Hill Church in Seattle continues to pump up the testosterone with ‘A Rebel’s Guide to Joy’. I admire Mars Hill for their ability to preach books by books through the Bible, yet maintain a high caliber of design. Beauty is one of their four core values, and it shows.

This series in particular matches what we’re trying to do. Use design to focus and explain the point of the preaching- because after all- everything preaches.

What I admire most.

At the beginning of a sermon a camera pans down through a cg prison to show a man, presumably Paul, with his hands in the air in a look of prayerful desperation. Without a word from the pastor, the context of the sermon is set. People see the emotion of Paul, and will remember for years to come that Philippians was written from a prison cell.

We Just Plant Seeds

November 7th, 2007
“And he said, The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come. ”
Mark 4: 26-2

You can’t grow the Church- You can get butts in seats, but you can’t make Christians with marketing, design, or even a great communicating pastor. Like a farmer planting seeds, we preach the Gospel(Matt. 31) and pray that the Spirit will work to make that seed take root. Jesus’ parable cuts straight through our pride, and makes us pause as we think about how we approach church marketing.

We are starting a blog to keep us honest. We want to stay true the mission that we’re on: To Glorify God Through Design.
