I’m Mad.

I was looking at the front page of Digg.com today and I’m burning mad. One of the most viewed news articles today is this: “Westboro Baptist planning protest Heath Ledger’s funeral“. The disgust rises up my throat, and I want to barf. After clicking on the picture, this is what I see:

In view of the mercy God has had on me, forgiving me of so much sin, I could never point the finger at another human, and say that God was going to damn them (1 John 1:8-10). I can’t speak of Mr. Ledger’s standing before God, but what I can speak of and warn my brother’s and sister’s of is this: God seems to have very little patience with those who are self-righteous and judge others.
Examples:
The Pharisee and the Tax Collector
Grace is not from what you do, but what God did.
God, I pray that you would show me, and the readers of this blog your mercy. I pray that would shed our pride, and make us need you even more. We pray that you would soften the hearts of those that attempt to make judgments in your name. We pray that you would show them how to follow you best.

I’ve also seen a post about this over at Collide.
Some of the people talking about it on the Collide site are here, and here.

I’ve read quite a bit about the WBC. All they want is publicity.
The more people that get enraged over what they do, the more they get what they want.
Although this will probably never ever happen, I think the most effective way to fight them and their hatred is to ignore them. Completely. Pretend like they don’t exist. Because talking about them and blogging about them, even to disagree, gives them what they want.
I somewhat agree with what you’re saying. But, in a world with technology like digg.com, you can’t put the cat back in the bag. This horrible action, has been a great inspiration for us to figure out how to communicate God’s grace. We just did a new post on that this morning.
Yeah, I was pretty pissed when I read this last night.
That’s true Mike. I agree with what you’re saying … a better idea is to share the truth about God instead of sharing their message just so we can disagree with it.
You know, this is… really sad to see. I can’t believe a church would do this.
The kind of hate that is spewed here makes me feel ill. I think a good policy to have in life is to never say anything to ANYONE that you couldn’t say to your dearest grandmother. and I could NOT say this to my dearest grandmother.
Who are these people? and what happened that they need love that badly?
