True Love

January 24th, 2008

You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. -Matthew 5:43-48

I read this verse and I am astonished how churches can be so quick to HATE those around them. Today when I heard about the protest that Westboro Baptist is holding I was furious. How can Christians have so much pride in themselves? How can Christians disregard their own sin and place it below the sins of others? The church is quick to condemn “evil doers” to hell, but slow to love and pray for them. Our world is dying, people are going to hell, we should be weeping for them.

I created the posters above to try in my small way to fight back at this view of sinners. No one is better than me or less deserving of Christ’s grace. I need to remind myself daily to love everyone no matter what, because Christ loved me, a wicked and filthy sinner.

Please download the posters and use them as you will. They were created at 11×17, black and white with no bleeds. They are very cheap to reproduce and can be enlarged at any Kinkos. Pass them along and post them where you can. I believe they will be shocking, but that shock will only point to Christ and his grace. If you would like the working files just let us know.

I saw this over at the Church Marketing Sucks lab. It’s obvious this was a labor of love. It’s great to see someone take take their gift (design) and weave it with their passion (love).

You’re very talented and I dig your blog. Rock on!

    Thanks Jason,
We want to see God glorified through design. I added your blog to my rss feeds.

I was going back to CMS Labs to ask you if we could borrow this, as our pastors loved it and wanted to use it. And there was a link to a free download! Thank you so much.

I’ll definitely send you photos of how we use it.

I like the thought and the design. It might be even better if you change up the text a little. For example, read it from the perspective of a person who is struggling with one of those sins (a homosexual for instance). It would appear that you lump them in with murderers, etc. I’m pretty sure they’d be offended and miss the core message at the end. You should recast the text to include Christians in the list (add sins like pride, bigotry, obesity, hypocrisy, etc.) And, then change the last line to be inclusive, maybe “Christ died for us all” or something. Just a thought. Great work!

I like that concept too. The “Homosexual” text is the one that I was on the fence with, and I understand reading it from their point of view. I feel the other words all work with the message. I like the idea of making this into multiple design depending on region and culture. My town is primarily Christian, but is very much in a bubble. I want people to re-think how they see sinners.

Thanks for the comment, this is all a work in progress.

What is the name of the font you use in this? I would like to make some more with other controversial words. Thanks

The font used is called “Interstate”. Great font, just make sure you buy it, no stealing for this one, or I will judge you and make a poster about it!!!!

    Kidding.

[…] while back the folk over at The Plow created a great poster that’s now been turned into a t-shirt. You can’t buy the shirt, but you can get one […]

I find it unfortunate that “homosexual” is connected with “pervert” as it pretty much plays into the dominant (conservative) discourse about homosexuality. The poster, in effect and perhaps unintentionally (I hope, at least), equates homosexuality with perverts, which in our culture is generally a word used in reference to child molesters.

What I would love to see is one that talks about loving rich CEOs, lobbyists, and Republicans, and rich white liberals who pay lip service to helping the poor.
