How do you make garbage interesting?

January 4th, 2008

Here is a fantastic example of communication (Watch the Entire Video). This online video is a shining example of how to grab a person’s attention and explain something of macroscopic complexity. The Story of Stuff boils the consumption problem down to it’s simplest form and delivers it in an engaging and viral medium, web-based video. I will bet that more people have learned about the garbage cycle for the first time this week via this video, than have heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the first time.   What can we learn from this video to help further the Kingdom of Christ?

  1. Get rid of the clutter- This film gets rid of any distraction. In order to have a blank canvas to paint their story in people’s minds.
  2. Care- The woman in this video is smart, concise, but most importantly she cares what she’s talking about, and it’s incredibly evident.
  3. Execute- If you’re going to do something, do it to the best of your ability. The animation on this one is quite polished, however, you can do something like this with a cheap camera, and thought.
  4. Have a Great Story- Jesus saving a dying world is the best and most relevant story that anyone at any stage of life can hear. There are probably a million different topics that you could make into a great explanatory video that would teach people about God. A great place to start is with the parable Jesus told. He remains to this day the best viral marketer of all time.

One of the reasons we think what we’re doing is great, is that we provide the experience and scale to create a shell of beautiful graphics and websites for the same amount a you would pay a part time assistant. This frees up the local graphic designers and web guys to use their highly valuable time to create great media to communicate the Gospel to your congregation. How will you use the tools of today to reach tomorrow’s followers of Christ?
