Good and Bad Innovation

April 6th, 2008

The church is just eating up the term innovation. It’s the new _____________ (fill in the blank: purpose-driven, seeker sensitive, missional, relevant, family focused, etc.)

Urgent Notice: Innovation is not strictly a good thing, especially in the church. By definition, innovation is introducing something new. Let me share with you a few examples of good and bad innovation.

Good Innovation:

The Printing Press: Everyone can read the Bible
Online Sermons: Everyone has access to every pastors teaching
The Reformation: The Pope isn’t infallible and you can’t pay to have your sins removed
Civil Rights Movement: Racism is a sign of sin, God created all men in His image. It’s good to change racism
Wells Powered By Kids: We want to buy one of these, $12,000 if you’re interested in helping, let me know.

Bad Innovation:
Online Porn: Millions in the church are held slave to this. We have an interview coming this week about this.
Mormonism, Jehovah’s Witness, etc.: Don’t innovate the Word of God.
Doctrine Twisting: If you’re questioning doctrine that’s been held for 2000 years, you’re probably wrong.
Prosperity Gospel: God isn’t a magic lamp that you can rub and get what you want
Most Innovation is Morally Neutral At Best.

We are guys that are paid to be creative and innovative for churches, which means we are always walking a razors edge. Innovation is best when getting rid of old sin, and stepping forward in faith to new life. Innovating our way out of the Christian ghetto of self-righteousness, to totally repentant lives.

If you’re seeking to innovate or hide good Bible based doctrine—BE CAREFUL. There are roughly infinity way to be heretical, please don’t.

One of our churches on TV

April 2nd, 2008

We’ve been working with Sugar Hill church for over a year now. They are a SBC church in Georgia, so they have a lot of culture and tradition that I don’t understand at all. But I think they are moving in a good direction of redirecting the thoughts of cultural Christianity in the South towards repentance and living redeemed lives.

Sugar Hill got on every local news station this week for apologizing to the community for pointing fingers and casting blame at gay people, adulterers, women who got abortion, etc. They are not saying that those things are okay, they are saying that those people need Jesus and not condemnation. Did you know that the blood of Jesus can atone for any sin? Even the worst ones? Well it can, because we have a God that is bigger and more amazing than you’ve ever imagined.

Check out some of the videos from TV stations:

P.S. We want to work with more churches because we think we can help people critically think about how to preach the gospel through message and design. If you know of any churches that would benefit from talking with us, you should point them in our direction.
