Not Art. Gospel.

June 22nd, 2008

Why create art? That is a question I have been asking myself a lot the past couple months. Do I want recognition? Do I want to stir up controversy? Do I feel like I am superior to others? The more I spend time thinking about my reasons for art, the less I spend time thinking of the gospel. So here is my resolution. Do not create art, but share the gospel. That is what I am focusing on for a new project. My goal is to create images for every topic on the Sermon on the Mount. I want the art to tell the story, I want the art to be the gospel.

I do not know what format this will take, or what I want it to become. Please pray that God will use this, and open up doors for His glory to be known.

Here is my first attempt.

Project One: M7:3-5

Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Matthew 7: 3-5

You are a genius, I LOVE THIS! Seriously, this is amazing, I love what you’re doing! Aggregate about 5 of these images into one post and I’ll definitely link to it!

Corey, you’re getting enough of these posters that it might be time to open an online shop.

    This is rad.

P.S. That’s not you holding the poster, is it?

Who knows, one day we may have a store by donation. I hope so! And no, not me.

I love this. I just found your site and am profoundly exited. Seriously. What can I do to help? How can I share these images (which are so delightfully Jesus-radical) with the world?

    I like the design.

For me, my art is an expression of my thoughts about the Gospel. I am a visual thinker, and so making a design (like the logo for my church, postcards, or graphics that express my view of mission) it helps me think.

I guess what I am saying is that graphics design is, for me, a form of meditation on whatever God is teaching me.

Din Medium? I don’t know much to say from a religious perspective, so I want to guess the typeface. I like the color (PantoneĀ® 291?), texture, size (24″x36″?) and the message.

You are such a design nerd. But correct on all but the size. 18×24, sorry G.

Cool, thought you’d be interested in this, a bunch of artists in OKC, have come together to respond to the sermon on the mount. We ended up with a 3 1/2 hour concert/performance and over 20 individual pieces of art. We are in the process of editing the footage for a DVD, putting the songs together for a CD and putting a book of the artwork together. You can find some of the info here:

Love the stuff I’m seeing over here. Keep up the good work. Can’t wait to see what else happens with the Sermon on the Mount pieces.
