Please Help, You Are My Only Hope.

November 12th, 2008

I am starting to work on a new project that is revolving around the 10 Commandments, and I need your help. Take the time to read through the text, and let me know what image comes to your mind. I want to find imagery that represents the whole of it. Please, I need your help!

My first thought was of a safety net. Then I thought of those sometimes overbearing, “Freedom isn’t free” signs.

Commandment 1- you shall have no other gods before me.

Giant foot stomping a bunch of idols. Including modern idols.

I always read the Commandments, in my head, with a loud, booming voice coming from a stack of thunder clouds. I am always humbled.

The only image in my mind right now after reading your post title, is Princess Leia as a hologram image saying, “General Kenobi: Years ago, you served my father in the Clone Wars; now he begs you to help him in his struggle against the Empire. I regret that I am unable to present my father’s request to you in person; but my ship has fallen under attack and I’m afraid my mission to bring you to Alderaan has failed. I’ve placed information vital to the survival of the rebellion into the memory systems of this R2 unit. My father will know how to retrieve it. You must see this droid safely delivered to him on Alderaan. This is our most desperate hour. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you’re my only hope.”

Maybe I’ll think of something better later…

Illustrator Dave Quiggle did a series on the ten commandments. Maybe you can find inspriation, or otherwise admire his work: http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=2112136&albumId=631918

Now he’s working on the Seven Deadly Sins.

The purpose of the ten commandments is to reveal the sin in our lives, our inability to satisfy God’s demand for perfection, and thus our need for a savior; so the image that comes to mind is a mirror that draws attention to imperfections. I also see masks being removed to reveal the sinful nature that we all work so hard to hide. I hope this helps.

The first image that comes to my mind is Jesus. He embodied all of the commandments and He is the closest to understanding God that we can comprehend because He was man and God. Maybe the word Commandments with roman numerals imposed over and image of Jesus or some sort of juxtaposition of the two.

Also an image of a cornucopia just out of the reach of an ever extended human hand. Always striving and always falling short. And always still supported by God.

I hope that this helps. Good luck.

What about a circular face with 10 (pizza) slices each with a picture of a murderer with blood on the knife, two adulterers together, lustful eyes, idols, a 7 day calendar, etc… in sort of Mayan themed symbols Or maybe a golden calf with the meat portions as commandments: for example the brisket, the loin, the butt, etc, but labeled as idols, murder, adultry - the Israelites reveling around with Moses’s tablets broken pieces obvious in the forground.
