What Are You Reading?

November 25th, 2008

I find reading to be a very stimulating and intellectually/spiritually challenging practice. It shapes the way I understand the world, and prompts me creatively. At any given time I’m in the process of reading 2-3 books,  a handful of magazines, and more RSS blog feeds than I know what to do with. I have found that most of the time I’m just skimming the content looking for words or phrases that peak my interest. However, every once in a while a gem comes along that I can’t “put down”. Be it a book or blog there are only few sources out there that fully resonate with where my soul is, and I can’t help but to devour every last word.

My question for you today is, what is/are your gem(s)? What can’t you put down at this moment?

Here is my top read right now. If you like living wide awake I encourage you to check it out:
The Trouble With Paris: Following Jesus in a World of Plastic Promises - Mark Sayers

I’m almost done with this book and am looking for a new mountain to climb. So let’s here from you!

Just finished Tribes by Seth Godin. Great book about people and groups. The best part is you can get a free audio book copy. Check out the link from by blog…

The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges.

I had never read it before, but it has been blowing me away with every page in every chapter.

I have been reading the Magic Tree House: Mummies in the Morning with my son. I know, that is a pretty deep book.

I’m about 2/3 through J.C. Ryle’s Holiness. Though written in 1878, it could have been written yesterday.

I’m almost finished with “The Decline of African American Theology” by Thabiti M. Anyabwile. Fascinating in its historical presentation of the African American churches journey away from solidly Reformed theology to health and wealth.

Next on the list is The Message of the New Testament: Promises Kept by Mark Dever.

My daughter and I enjoy reading the ABC book by Dr. Seuss.

One read that I don’t miss is the Plow blog.

This past summer I couldn’t put down Mark Batterson’s In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day. His followup book, Wild Goose Chase was also great. I have more to say on Lions and the Wild Goose on my blog.
